Our Rabbits

When my folks bought the old farm house in 69’, there were empty rabbit hutches down at the barn. The previous occupants had let all the rabbits out.  Dad devised a box on a stick with a long string.  My sister & I would be up on the porch watching for a rabbit to find the bait under the box then quickly pull the string!  You had to be quick and get the rabbit out before they could dig out underneath.

Rabbit was always in our diet growing up.  During WWII rabbit was a mainstay in most people’s diets since the “good” meat was saved for our troops.  Rabbit was an easy, inexpensive meat to raise in a small backyard setting.  Rabbit tastes similar to chicken but is leaner.

In 2014 I purchased 9 young does and two bucks.  We are still organizing and growing our rabbit inventory but plan on being in full swing by 2015! 

In June 2014 our farm got a WSDA Processing license to sell rabbit meat raised on the farm. Being one of about 10 rabbit processor’s in Washington State!  We also plan on expanding into processing rabbits raised by others for their own personal use.
